Winterization is the term we use when we are asked to prepare a home to remain vacant throughout the winter season. Winterization includes several items. First, we prepare the plumbing system to withstand freezing temperatures. We disconnect, drain and dry the lines, and then we protect all traps and toilets from freezing. We make a visual inspection of the property to make sure that the roof, windows and doors are in sufficient repair. At this time, we check that all storm windows and fireplace dampers are closed. We also make sure that the sump-pump is operational. If the heat is to remain on, it is usually set to 50F. Of course, we're not done until we've posted our notices and stickers.
